James Frey, the Smoking Gun, and memoirs

Posted by Hylton Jolliffe

» The New York Times, reports on Doubleday's statement yesterday that it would stand by James Frey and his best-selling memoir "A Million Little Pieces" despite the Smoking Gun's expose on its numerous apparent fabrications (Frey has claimed many times that the account of his life was 100% accurate).

The Times: "Doubleday's response underscores the gap that has emerged between book publishing and the rest of the media, which in recent years have been under increasing scrutiny over the accuracy of their reporting. Other high-profile media outlets have been criticized for reports whose truth was later questioned, including Stephen Glass's fabrications at The New Republic, Jayson Blair's reporting for The New York Times and CBS News's reporting on President Bush's National Guard record."

The only reason I read this book was because it was published as non fiction. A class action lawsuit should be filed against Doubleday, Frey and Harpo for misrepresenting this rotton liar.

If you're going to write a memoir it had better be true, otherwise, write fiction.

I have not read this book. I saw The Smoking Gun's article about the investigations into the criminal charges Mr. Frey has noted. I do not doubt that others have found the tale moving. I am sure it is. But the truth is a fragile object, especially to those who are addicts.

An ex-addict who claims to have come through this harrowing experience through nothing but his own willpower is hard to believe. No matter how much I want to believe it. No one gets through these situations alone. NO ONE. Mr. Frey should be ashamed and admit what he has done. I have no problem with it being fiction. But do not tout it as fact and sell it as such if it is not. Making money off the hope and faith of others is about as low as one can get and unfortunately Mr. Frey has sunk lower than claims to have sunk in his memoirs. He should be utterly ashamed of himself.

Come clean or produce someone who can back up the claims you make. It is quite remarkable that all the people with whom you share this story are "unreachable".

Quite remarkable indeed.

A class action lawsuit was filed in Chicago against Frey and his publishers on Jan. 12, 2006. What do you think about this?
