Quelling Rumors about "10 Facts" at The L.A.Times

Posted by Tish Grier

The Los Angles Times recently found itself at the center of a hoax that falsely attributed "10 facts" about illegal immigration to articles published in the paper. The Times investigated and found "just one Op-ed column — by leading anti-immigration figure Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Col.) — that comes close to stating what the e-mail hoax claims," and are investigating possible sources for some of the false information on illegal immigration that is circulating across the internet.

Steve Yelvington considers the troubling lightning-speed at which the LA Times hoax spread: "The Internet gives rumor and falsehood the same acceleration that it gives the truth. It's our responsibility to take advantage of the tool it gives us to listen -- and where we discover lies being circulated, to act...Speaking truth to power isn't just about confronting the government and big corporations. As the Internet shifts power to individuals, we need to be speaking truth to the blogosphere as well."

Jonhathan Dube highlights a new venture that plans to pay citizen journalists for their writing: "Out2 Media Group has begun paying news contributors -- citizen journalists -- a fee for writing self-submitted articles for its network of local news sites... Payments start at $5 per article."
